I guess we should talk more football – yea? Josh Freeman

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Josh Freeman wears #1 on his jersey and he was picked in the first round as the 17th pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  I have to tell you that I don’t follow the NFL like I did at one time but back in my day, I’d love to have been moving to Tampa Bay to work.  And, if my work included playing sports, I would have even been more excited.

So, what do we know about Freeman, we know he is a smart, instinctive field general who has spent  most of his time at quarterback and has done quite an outstanding job there.  He is considered to be accurate underneath and does a great job throwing receivers open, allowing them to run after the catch.  He is supposedly really good and deciphering defenses and getting rid of the ball before he finds himself flat on his back.

So, what does he do wrong?  Well, he is kind of short.  I mean, if you call 6 feet short.  For a quarterback it is a bit short in the NFL and supposedly he finds himself looking for throwing lanes with all the taller and bigger players around him.  He played mostly from the shotgun at Missouri and has to learn to take snaps from the center.  And, it’s possible he really doesn’t have an NFL caliber arm.

Now see, I don’t believe that he is as great as this says he is nor do I buy into the fact that he doesn’t have an NFL arm because, duh, why would they have taken him.  All good things aside, if you are the quarterback and can’t throw well….what are you then??? A running back?

Looks pretty doggone good to me!!!  Do looks matter in his profession?

Steve Spurrier – the ol’ cat

Monday, April 27th, 2009

You know, I just gave the article about Spurrier’s kicker being drafted the last pick in the 2009 NFL draft.  But, we really should talk about ol’ Steve himself don’t you think?  I mean, he’s been around a while.  And, it doesn’t appear that he is going anywhere by college football standards.  I actually rooted for him for the Alabama job before we got Saban.  But, we got a winner so that’s all good too, right?

Steve Spurrier has been around forever too.  I remember when he coached at Florida and it was all out fight every time they took the field.  I mean, this man was a college quarterback who was awesome by his own standards even.  He knows the game.  He knows how to win.  He knows how to make it work.  He was the Heisman Trophy Winner in 1966 which hey, that was before even I was born.  That means he’s been at the football world for as man years as I am old.  I mean come on, you don’t hang around in a job that long if you aren’t good at it, right?

He let the Florida Gators to one National Championship in 1996 which was during all the years when I remember watching him intently  on the sidelines.  He taught his players to be team players, to listen to their coaches but to also think for themselves.  And, in my personal opinion, that’s what’s most important in the real world anyway, giving college kids the ability to think for themselves, make themselves smarter and better people in our society.  If Steve Spurrier can’t do that, no one can.

The Last Guy Picked

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

He might have been the last guy picked in the 2009 NFL draft but I can bet you one thing, he doesn’t care.  He is in, he’s there, he’s going and he has to be super excited.  South Carolina’s Ryan Succop earned the honor when the Kansas City Chiefs selected him as the 256th and final pick this year.

What do we know about Ryan Succop – enough.  I saw his picture and he certainly appears to look good enough to make a TV Boyfriend by my standards.  He was 20-30 in his field goal attempts including a perfect 30 for 30 in extra points for Steve Spurrier’s team in 2008.  He didn’t make the ALL-SEC team but he was the 5th rated kicker on Mel Kiper’s board.

Kansas City took 2 kickers this year and saw enough promise in him to take him as one of them.  And, get this, while he is out there making records, he is only the 3rd kicker to ever be selected as the final pick.  So hey, how can you complain?

He is 22 years old and will likely compete with incumbent kicker Connor Barth for the starting position in Kansas City.  And, rumor has it, he’s good for it, he doesn’t seem to have any problems dealing with attention.  Most guys who look like him are quite accustom to attention so hey, he is just simply another college athlete in that sense.

See what I mean, does this look like a guy who’s being bothered by attention?

RYAN SUCCOP 1

And more importantly than anything, he graduated.  He isn’t one of those college athletes that put all his chickens in the NFL, and it’s a good thing I guess when you get down to being the last pick, eh?  He’s good for it though, check him out.

Erick Dampier – yea, him too

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

So, yea, there were 2 guys from the Tales from the Dallas Mavericks’>Dallas Mavericks got on the elevator, headed up a few floors, stopped on floor 3 because, hey, I was headed up to my floor.  Little did they know that this goofy Alabama blogger was going to get on the elevator with them.  And, with that, they had no clue that she was going to look at them and recognize them (which I’m sure happens alot, but a 40 year old blogger?  not so much).

And, this crazy blogger woman had been grabbing other women all weekend and squeezing them because she totally had been reading their blogs forever and felt like they were rockstars…but when given the opportunity, she didn’t even touch these men…neither of them……….no camera, no pen, no paper…just my word….yea, that!

Jason Kidd – ooo lala

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Yea, I’m so not kidding when I say to you that the Tales from the Dallas Mavericks’>Dallas Mavericks and Jason Kidd were in the same flippin’ hotel that I was in this weekend.  No KIDding.  Here’s a photo of Jason with Yvonne from Joyunexpected.  Because, you see, I’m an idiot and when I got on the elevator with these 2 men (Jason and Erick Dampier) I had no camera, no pen, no paper, nothing…..just me wondering if I’d ever find myself in this position again.

Yvonne and Jason Kidd y and jason kidd

But, here’s the proof, right here in this picture…and if you need proof, there’s a picture of me and Yvonne on my flickr stream so there.

As most of you already know, I’m a huge fan of almost any and ever athlete out there.  Very rarely do I find a player that I don’t like for some reason or another.  So, yea, I was thrilled to get on an elevator with these guys…and totally flippin’ out.

For those of you who may not be as equally engrossed with athletes, here’s a little info on this great man.  He was born on March 23, 1973, he is 6’4” (which people, that’s totally stretching him out as much as possible) and he weighs about 210 pounds.  He has been in the NBA for 14 years and he is still “all that and a ball of wax”.

So, just look at these photos, enjoy the sight and know that I totally could have been in that photo with this man…

Alex, how could you do this to me?

Monday, February 9th, 2009

As you may or may not know, Alex Rodriquez is far and away one of my favorite athletes.  He is good looking, he is good at what he does and man, oh man, have you seen him without a shirt.  But, as it is now, he say she felt pressure to justify his record-shattering contract and he admitted to using illegal performance-enhancing substances while he was with the Texas Rangers.

I  mean, come on guys, just do what’s right…and admitting what you did is not doing what’s right.  Not doing the enhancements is doing what’s right.  He is gorgeous, he is a super athlete and I can’t help but wonder if he really needed those drugs to make him who he is today?

He admitted all this just days after Sports Illustrated reported that he was one of 104 players to test positive in what was suppose to be an anonymous “sample” testing.  He said when he arrived in Texas he felt an enormous amount of pressure and he he had the weight of the world on his shoulders to perform.  Ok, I get it, he felt pressure but he was put in that position because he was good enough to be there, why did he have to break my heart and end up on the front page of the bad side of the news?

Rafael Nadel

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Ok, first of all, you know I don’t like to keep my eye on the youngsters (whatever) but this guy was born the year I graduated from high school.  Yea, makes me feel really old.  He is a Spanish professional tennis player and has been ranked World No 1 since August of 2008.

He was born an athlete and into a family of athletes.  Basically his uncle is a former professional tennis player and was the one who introduced him to the game when he was three.  He made his debut in 202 ranked 235th and then moved to number 47 the next year.

As of 2009, he has won six Grand Slam singles titles, and the 2008 Olympic Gold medal in singles.  He has wont he last four French Open singles titles and that puts in him an elite category with Born Borg in 2008 to be the only man to have won four consecutive singles titles there.

In 2009 he became the first Spaniard to win the Australian Open and the fourth male tennis player, behind Jimmy Connors, Mats Wilander and Andre Agassi to win Grand Slam titles on three different surfaces.

Wanna peek at him?

John Parker Wilson

john-parker-wilson-pic1

Yea, I’m an Alabama fan and with the Tide failing to Roll right now, I still wanted to toss in a word for John Parker Wilson.  The kid is amazing.  He is a good guy, a good student, a great athlete and he simply came from a good family.  His mother was a University cheerleader back in her day and his father played baseball for……Orioles maybe.  I’ll have to check that fact to be certain about it.

He is an Alabama born and bred kid too, so you know, you can’t help but cheer for the hometown guys, right?  He was actually one of the featured players from Two-A-Days and is also a member now of the Sigma Nu Fraternity at UA.

He is 6′2" and about 215 pounds…born in October of 1985 and hails from Hoover Alabama…which is, where the school from the MTV featured show named above was filmed.

His on the field stats say more about him than anything….but what will he do when he is done on the football field.  He wears number 14…that still doesn’t tell me what he plans to do next year….or when he graduates…so I’m still looking for that info for you.

john parker

I did find a funny article where some LSU fans got their hands on JP’s cell phone number before the LSU game and posted it on the internet.  Poor guy, I bet his phone was ringing off the dang hook.  The article I found made reference to his late night "booty calls" but…surely not, this kid just looks to green doesn’t he?  Just kidding….he looks good, even if he is only 23.

jp wilson

Ok, so we are nearing the end of the 4th quarter and it’s just not looking good for the Tide.  That’s ok, we hold our head high and when we have a quarterback of this caliber…why not hold our head way up there?  Ok, I can’t find exactly who his father played baseball for but I know I heard that earlier.  If someone can find it, shoot the info my way, please.

So, for reals, soccer it is….and again, another little baby in terms of my age.  He was born in 1981 and is a Spanish football goalkeeper who plays for Spanish La Liga club Real Madrid C.F. and the Spanish national team.  He was a product of the Real Madrid’s youth system and started in the junior squad during the 1990-1991 season but it wasn’t until 1998 -99 that he debuted in the senior side.

He was good enough to replace Bodo IIIgner and was then Real’s starting lineup the next season.  He then became the youngest ever goalkeeper to ever play in a Champion League final when Real Madrid defeated Valancia C.F. 3-0 just four days after his 19th birthday.

He lost his spot to backup Cesar Sanchez after a patch of bad form during the 2001-02 campaign.  Soon after that though Sanchez suffered an injury in the last minutes of madrids 2-1 2002 Champions League final victory over Bayer Leverkusen.  And, that was Casillas big chance once again.

In February 2008 he signed a contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2017, with an automatic extension if he plays 30 competitive matches during the final season of his contract.

His individual accolades include a Bravo Award in 2000, UEFA Team of the Year in 2007, Zamora Trophy in 2007-2008 and as of late, he was named the FIFPro World XI in 2007 and 2008.

While in Madrid, he was La Liga, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2008 as well as Spanish Super Cup in 2001, 2003 and 2008.  He also managed to find time to play in the Intercontinental cup in 2002.

More soccer guys, so much more soccer.  Andriy is from the Ukraine and instead of playing as a footballer, we can definitely call him a soccer player.  He was born on September 29, 1976 which is officially makes him a baby by my terms.  He was born in Dvirkivscyna, Kiev Oblast and played for A.C. Milan and the Ukraine national team.  He is the third highest scorer in the history of European club completion with sixty goals behind Flippo Inzaghi and Gerd Muller.

When he was nine, it was the time of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and his village was affected by the disaster.  His family was forced to abandon their home and move to the coast to escape the after effects.  Prior to that time he had also dabbled in boxing but eventually decided to move on to soccer.

He is married to an American model Kristen Pazik.  They met at a Giorgio Armani part in 2002 and were married in July of 2004 in a private ceremony on a golf course.  Uh?  A golf course?  Ok, whatever.  They use Italian as their primary language but he is making public his desire to learn English.

His name does not have a single transliterated and the spelling used throughout his career has been adopted by UEFA and FIFA.  It is the most preferred spelling in English publications as well.  His individual accolades include Commonwealth of Independent States Cup Top Scorer in 1997 to a Ukrainian Footballer of the Year in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004 and 2005 all the way to an A.C. Milan second time all-star scorer.

Michael Owen

Monday, November 17th, 2008

More soccer men, no more of this English footballer talk, I’m calling it soccer.  Again though, I don’t understand the game so I’m telling you that he is a striker but I have no idea what that means.  What I do know is that he looks doggone good.  He is currently England’s fourth highest scorer of all time with forty goals.  He was the recipient of the Ballon D’or in 2001.

His early life was spent in Chester, Cheshire.  He started playing soccer when he was  really young and he loved kicking a football around with his dad and two brothers even at the very young age.  He got his first pair of football boots when he was seven years old.  That might have been old then but now, that’s pretty normal I think.  His favorite player was Gary Lineker and he always insisted that he was Gary when he and his dad had a kick about.

By the time he was seven his father persuaded the manager of Mold Alexandra to let Owen play on his team of 10 year olds.  He was younger than most and most definitely smaller.  He was busily showing off his flair and started in most games becoming known as the team’s secret weapon.

His individual accomplishments include PFA Young Player of the Year in 1998, BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1998 and Ballon D’or in 2001.

I’m thinking that he really wasn’t that young when he started when you consider the children today who are so young out there on ball fields all over America playing soccer.  My own child played a team sport at the age of 5 this year but we haven’t attempted soccer yet.

Steven Gerrard

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

Ok, so see, I’m on this soccer role and I can’t stop myself.  All of these guys came as suggestions through comments so if you have a guy you’d like to see me feature, by all means, leave me a comment.

Steven Gerrard is an English footballer and I’m going to quit calling them that, they are soccer players, sorry.  He is usually used in the box to box midfield role and well, I have no clue what that means.  He has often been deployed as a right-sided midfielder and occasionally as a second striker.

See, now, remember I don’t know too much about soccer so that is meaningless to me unlike what it would be if we were talking about American football.  Anyway, Gerrard made his international debut in 2000 when he represented England in the UEFA Euroopean Championships in 2000 and 204 as well as the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

His individual honors include PFA Young Player of the Year in 2000-2001 all the way through the UEFA Team of the Year in 2004 and 2005, 2005 and 2006 and 2006 and 2007 along with PFA Team of the year in 2000-2001, 2003-2004, 2004-2005, 2005-2006, and 2007-2008.  Sounds like he might be a darn good player and well, have you seen him?  Cochlea.

Some other miscellaneous news about Gerrard is that he is a member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2007 and Honorary Fellowship from Liverpool John Moores University in 2008.

So, without any further bragging, let’s look at this dude!

Fernando Torres

Friday, November 14th, 2008

After I wrote about Cristiano Ronaldo, I received an email from someone chastising me for not looking further into the beauty of soccer players.  I think I’ve told you all before, I don’t much like soccer.  But, when I found out they had men that look like Fernando Torres, it wasn’t long til I was searching and finding some men that were hot hot hot.  So, here I give you some of these hot men.

I ran into a few problems trying to dig up some information on him though, most of it wasn’t in English and I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that I don’t speak any other language, nor do I read it?

And, like magic, a Wikipedia page shows up.  There is a saving grace it seems.  So, we get a Spanish Footballer (or Soccer Player) if ou will and he plays in the English Premier League club in Liverpool F.C. and the Spanish national time.  He started his career with Atletico Madrid, progressing through their youth ranks.  He made his professional debute in 2001 and finished his career with the club having scored 75 goals in 174 La Liga appearances.

Currently he is dating Olalla.  Now I have no clue who that is but apparently she is someone famous that they only gave us her first name, right?  HIs honors include a Nike Cup in 1999, the Nike Cup Top Scorer in 1999 to the Best Young European Player in 1999.

And, now, in recent years, he is Liverpools top scorer in 2007 and 2008, as well as FIFPRo World XI in 2007 and 2008.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

Yummy Cristiano Ronaldo, need I say more?  He is a Portuguese fooballer who plays as a winger for English Premier League club.  He started his career at C.D. National and his successes with the team let to a move to Sporting two season afterwards.

He played for C.F. Andorinha at age eight and his father was the kit man.  In 1995, he signed with local club CD National and after a title winning campaign, he went on a three-day trial with Sporting Portugal who eventually signed him but they wouldn’t tell how much he was going to be making.

He became the only player to play for Sporting’s U-16, U-17, U-18, B-team and first team all in one season.  He scored two goals in his debut.  Liverpool F.C. was the first to spot him, but they didn’t take him because Gerard Houllier said that his young age of 16 was too young and he needed some time to develop his skills.

cristiano ronaldo

I don’t know about you but all that hoopla doesn’t mean one thing to me, I actually prefer my men to play regular football in the NFL but when they look like Cristiano, well all that goes out the window.  I don’t care who you play for, and in some cases which team you play for doesn’t matter.  When you look like this…. who can argue with anything else.

ronaldo_3

Yea I’m all about some American football and I really have never been too much of a soccer fan at all, but I don’t see too many soccer players running around that look like Ronaldo either.
